A quiet forest levada from São Jorge, ending at a spring in a green cul-de-sac.
The King's Levada starts at a water treatment plant above São Jorge and runs 5 km into thick laurisilva, finishing at the Ribeiro Bonito spring. It gets a fraction of the traffic of the western walks.
The walk
About 10 km return, largely level, with one short tunnel and a few narrow sections. Allow 3 hours. Because it is out-and-back through unbroken forest, it feels remote very quickly.
It stays green and shaded even in August, which makes it a good hot-weather choice.
