Camacha

Wickerwork, folk dancing and the place Madeira's football was first played.

A hill village above Funchal that has made willow baskets for two centuries and still runs a wicker workshop and showroom. Cool, green, and a short drive from the city.

Wicker

Willow is grown in the valleys around the village, soaked, stripped and woven by hand. The main showroom sells everything from baskets to furniture, and you can usually watch weavers at work.

A plaque in the square marks the first football match played in Portugal, in 1875, by a Camacha resident educated in England.

Around the village

The Levada dos Tornos passes nearby with easy walking and tea houses along it, and the Quinta do Palheiro gardens are ten minutes downhill.

Local tips

  • It is 700 m up and noticeably cooler than Funchal — bring a layer.
