A private estate garden combining formal English planting with Madeiran and southern-hemisphere species, spread over lawns, camellia woodland and a sunken garden. It sees a fraction of Monte's visitors.
The planting
Laid out from the early 19th century and developed by the Blandy family from 1885, it holds an outstanding camellia collection that flowers from late autumn into spring, plus proteas, magnolias and mature laurels.
It is a garden for walking slowly rather than ticking off features. Allow 90 minutes.
