Jardim Botânico da Madeira

The island's botanical garden occupies a former quinta on the slope above Funchal, with a famous geometric parterre, an endemic Madeiran section and a view straight down the valley to the sea.

What is planted

Around 2,500 species across themed areas: succulents, palms, tropical fruit, medicinal plants and a serious collection of Madeiran endemics you will otherwise only see in the laurisilva.

The natural history museum and a parrot park sit within the grounds.

Getting there

A cable car links the garden to Monte, so you can arrive by teleférico from the old town and come back a different way. Buses run from the city, and taxis take about ten minutes.
