Which walks, beaches and boat trips work with children, and how to pace the week.

Where to base a family
Stay low and stay south. Mountain villages are lovely and cold after dark, and the drive back up at bedtime is nobody's friend. Calheta, Funchal and the Garajau side all work.
Walks that work
Levada dos Balcões is short, mostly level and ends at a view. Ponta de São Lourenço is doable with older children but has real drop-offs. Avoid the Arieiro ridge entirely with under-twelves.
Bring a carrier rather than a pushchair for anything off pavement.
Water
Calheta for sand, Porto Moniz for the lava pools with lifeguards, Faial and Seixal for something wilder. Morning boat trips are noticeably calmer than afternoon ones.

Practicalities
Car seats must be pre-booked with rental companies and often run out in summer. Most restaurants are relaxed about children and serve early by Portuguese standards.
