North coast: lava pools
Porto Moniz has two sets — a paid complex with lifeguards and changing rooms, and a free natural section next to it. Both close during heavy swell.
Seixal has black volcanic sand, a waterfall behind the beach and a separate natural pool a few minutes away.

South coast: sand and complexes
Calheta and Machico have imported golden sand and are the calmest options with children. Funchal's Lido and Doca do Cavacas are sea-water complexes rather than beaches.
For snorkelling
The Garajau marine reserve is the standout — protected since 1986, with large resident grouper that are entirely unbothered by people.
