Wicker sledges steered downhill by two men in straw hats. Since 1850.
The carros de cesto began as transport for people coming down from Monte to Funchal and never stopped. Two carreiros in white cotton and boaters run the sledge down 2 km of steep public road using their boots as brakes.
What it is actually like
It lasts about ten minutes and reaches perhaps 30 km/h — fast enough to be fun, slow enough to be safe. The route runs on open road past houses and gardens down to Livramento.
It is touristy and unapologetic about it, and it is also a genuine 175-year-old tradition still run by the same families.
Getting back
The run ends at Livramento, not in the city centre. Taxis wait at the bottom, and buses run from the main road. Factor that into the cost.
