Walking the village

Park at the top and walk down. The lanes are paved in basalt with flowers everywhere, ending at a small promenade above the boulders. A handful of cafés and guesthouses make up the commerce.

The old coastal path to Paul do Mar takes about an hour along the cliff and is one of the best short coastal walks on the island.

Surfing

The right-hand point break here was once on the world tour calendar. It works on serious winter swell and is not a beginner's wave; watch rather than paddle out unless you know what you are doing.
