The island's westernmost lighthouse, on a 300 m cliff, with almost nobody there.
The far west corner of Madeira: farmland, a working lighthouse, a small museum and a cliff-edge view of nothing but Atlantic. It is the best sunset on the island and one of the quietest places to watch it.
What is there
The Farol da Ponta do Pargo sits at around 312 m above the sea, one of the highest lighthouses in Europe. A small free exhibition inside covers Madeira's lighthouse network, and the grassy clifftop around it is open to walk.
The village itself is agricultural and unfussed by tourism — a couple of cafés, a church, and terraces of vines.
The drive
About 90 minutes from Funchal via the fast VE road to Calheta then up over the western plateau. Most people combine it with Porto Moniz or Fanal rather than doing it alone.
Local tips
- — Check sunset time and allow an hour to drive back over the plateau in the dark — the road is unlit and often foggy.
