Ancient til trees in fog on the western plateau — the island's strangest landscape.
A high pasture ringed by centuries-old laurel trees, twisted into shapes that photograph like something out of a fairy tale when the mist rolls in. It is a place that depends entirely on weather.
Fog is the point
In clear sun Fanal is a pleasant meadow with old trees and cows. In fog — most common early morning and late afternoon, and far more likely in winter and spring — it becomes genuinely otherworldly.
There is a car park, picnic tables and a short circular path (PR13 branches from here). You are free to walk among the trees; the ground is boggy after rain.
Getting there
About 1h45 from Funchal via Ribeira Brava and the plateau, or up from Porto Moniz on a slow winding road. The last stretch is often in cloud — drive with lights on.
