Paúl da Serra

Madeira's only high plateau — moorland, wind turbines and free-roaming cows.

A flat, treeless upland at around 1,400 m that feels nothing like the rest of the island. It is the crossing point between north and south in the west, and the gateway to Rabaçal and Fanal.

Driving across

The ER110 runs the length of the plateau. In clear weather it is an extraordinary drive with views down both coasts; in fog, which is common, visibility drops to a few car lengths and cattle wander onto the road.

There are no fuel stations, shops or reliable phone signal up here. Fill up in Ribeira Brava or Calheta first.

What to stop for

Bica da Cana at the eastern end is the best formal viewpoint. Several unmarked pull-ins along the ER110 look straight down into the Ribeira Brava valley, and the turn-off for Rabaçal and the 25 Fontes walk is roughly halfway.

Local tips

  • Drive slowly at dusk — the cows are unlit and unbothered.
  • If the plateau is fogged in, the coast road via São Vicente is the reliable alternative.
