Where Zarco landed in 1419 and the island's first capital. Today it is a relaxed east-coast town with a golden beach, a good seafront, and the airport ten minutes away.
History and town
The Capela dos Milagres and the 15th-century parish church anchor the old centre, and the Forte de Nossa Senhora do Amparo guards the bay. It is a town people live in rather than visit, which makes it pleasant out of season.

With the Ponta de São Lourenço trail, Prainha, Caniçal and the whale museum all within fifteen minutes, Machico works well as a base for the east — and for early or late flights.
