Pico do Arieiro

Madeira's third-highest peak, and the only one you can drive to.

At 1,818 m you can park a few steps from the summit, which makes Pico do Arieiro the easiest way on the island to stand above the cloud layer. Sunrise is the reason most people come, and the reason the car park fills before it is light.

What you actually see

The road climbs out of Funchal through Poiso and finishes on a bare volcanic ridge. From the terrace the ground drops away on both sides into the Curral and Fajã da Nogueira valleys, with Pico Ruivo and Pico das Torres lined up to the north west.

On a good morning the inversion sits at roughly 1,200–1,500 m, so the peaks poke through a flat white floor. On a bad morning you are inside that floor, in wind, with visibility of about twenty metres. The difference is entirely luck and the previous night's weather.

Getting there and timing

Around 45 minutes from Funchal by car on the ER202 via Poiso. There is a large free car park and a café at the summit, plus a radar station you cannot enter.

For sunrise, aim to arrive 45 minutes before the official time — both to park and because the best colour comes before the sun clears the horizon. It is genuinely cold up there: expect ten to fifteen degrees below Funchal, plus wind.

Beyond the terrace

The PR1 Vereda do Areeiro starts here and runs to Pico Ruivo — one of the great walks in the Atlantic, but exposed, tunnelled and strenuous. Even walking the first fifteen minutes to the Ninho da Manta balcony is worth it and needs nothing more than shoes with grip.

Local tips

  • Check a webcam or the IPMA mountain forecast before setting off — cloud below you is the goal, cloud around you is the risk.
  • Bring a windproof layer even in August.
  • If the car park is full, the lay-bys on the approach road have views almost as good.
