Arieiro to Ruivo along the roof of the island — the island's hardest classic.
Seven kilometres of ridge, staircase, tunnel and exposure connecting Madeira's third-highest peak to its highest. Spectacular, strenuous, and not a walk to improvise.
The reality of it
There is roughly 1,000 m of combined ascent and descent, several unlit tunnels, long sections with drops on both sides, and no water or food between the two ends. Allow 3.5–4.5 hours one way.
The 'east' variant of the route is longer and steeper than the shorter western bypass; both are physically demanding.
Logistics
Most people walk one way and arrange a taxi or transfer from Achada do Teixeira back to Arieiro — the two car parks are an hour apart by road. Guided groups handle this for you.
Sections close after storms and rockfall. Check the official trail status before you drive up.
Local tips
- — Head torch, two litres of water, wind layer, and check for closures.
- — If cloud is sitting on the ridge, you will see nothing and the rock will be slick — postpone it.
