A tiny municipal teleférico drops from the village of Achadas da Cruz to the Fajã da Quebrada Nova, a strip of terraces and sheds by the sea reachable no other way except a punishing footpath.
The descent
The cabin takes a handful of people at a time and drops at an alarming angle for about four minutes. At the bottom there are vegetable plots, a pebble shore, a few fishermen's huts and complete quiet.
It was built for the farmers who still work the fajã, not for tourists, which is exactly why it is worth doing.
Before you go
It closes in high wind and for maintenance, and the schedule is not always published reliably. Have a plan B — Porto Moniz is twenty minutes away.
