Black sand, a sea pool, big Atlantic swell and one of the last steam-powered sugar-cane distilleries in Europe, still producing rum from cane grown around the village.
The village
Penha de Águia (Eagle Rock) looms 590 m above the bay and can be climbed on a steep marked path. Below, there is a small black-sand beach, a natural sea pool and a promenade.
The Engenho do Norte mill runs its steam engine during the spring cane harvest and has a bar and small museum year round.
Surf and swell
This is one of the island's main surf spots, and the water is often too rough for casual swimming. The sea pool is the safe alternative.
