Ribeira Brava sits where the island's main north–south route meets the sea. It has a long promenade, a pebble beach, a 16th-century church with a striking tiled tower, and an ethnographic museum.

In town

The seafront is wide and unhurried, with cafés facing the water and a small fort turned tourist office. The São Bento church holds a Manueline stone font and a decorated bell tower.

The Museu Etnográfico da Madeira, in an old sugar-cane mill, is one of the better wet-weather stops on the island.
