Cabo Girão Skywalk

A glass floor 580 m above the Atlantic, ten minutes from Câmara de Lobos.

One of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, with a cantilevered glass platform that lets you look straight down at the fajã terraces and the water. It takes twenty minutes to visit and is one of the most reliable stops on the south coast.

The view

East along the coast you can see Funchal's bay and the airport headland; west it is cliff after cliff towards Ribeira Brava. Below, the Fajãs do Cabo Girão are small farmed shelves at sea level, still worked and reachable by their own cable car from Rancho.

Practicalities

The skywalk itself is free. Parking beside it is paid and gets busy between 10am and 4pm when coaches arrive; there is a café, toilets and a small market of local produce.

It is genuinely windy on the platform, and the glass is often wet. Hold onto hats and phones.

  • — Combine with lunch in Câmara de Lobos, ten minutes downhill.
  • — The fajã cable car at Rancho is a quieter, stranger experience than the skywalk itself.
