Ten minutes west of Funchal, this is where the black scabbard fishing fleet ties up and where poncha bars serve rum, honey and lemon in tiny glasses all afternoon. Churchill painted the bay in 1950 and the view has barely changed.

The harbour

Boats are pulled up onto the shingle rather than moored, and the fishermen mend nets on the quay in the afternoon. The Churchill viewpoint on the eastern side of the bay is where he set up his easel.

The old town lanes behind the harbour are scruffier and more real than Funchal's, with tiny bars that hold six people.

Poncha and lapas

Poncha is aguardente de cana, honey and citrus, mashed together with a wooden caralhinho. Order the traditional lemon version before trying the fruit ones. Grilled limpets with garlic butter are the standard accompaniment.

Local tips

  • Walk the coastal promenade from Funchal if you have the legs — around two hours.
  • Cabo Girão is ten minutes up the hill.
