Where to eat scabbard fish, espetada and limpets, from the market to the hills.

Madeiran produce and flowers at the Funchal market

What to order

Espada com banana (black scabbard fish with fried banana), espetada on a bay skewer, lapas grelhadas (limpets in garlic butter) and bolo do caco. Finish with poncha, which is stronger than it tastes.

Where locals eat

The old town has the density but not always the value. Head to Câmara de Lobos for fish by the harbour, or up to Santo António da Serra at the weekend for espetada cooked over wood.

Booking

Reserve for dinner between June and September and over New Year. Most kitchens close by 22:30.
